This eye-opening 2013 documentary from He Xiaopei and Yuan Yuan takes an intimate look at the phenomenon of contract marriages in China between gay men and lesbians. These marriages are strategic necessities for survival for many queer Chinese citizens used to alleviate society’s heteronormative pressures.
Our Marriages follows four lesbians over the course of two years, as they negotiate their marriages to gay men while carving out spaces of communal living that enable queer forms of love, desire and family to exist under the auspices of traditional heterosexual marriage.
He Xiaopei and Yuan Yuan are the founders of ‘Pink Space’, an NGO working with people marginalised because of their gender and sexuality to create art representing their desires and experiences.
Yuan Yuan joins us for a post-screening Q&A.
