PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
The University of Sussex Students’ Union has joined calls from other local groups for the staging of a ‘Big Kiss In’ at the Sainsbury’s on New England Street Brighton on Wednesday 15th October, from 6pm.
This is in direct response to the abhorrent revelations that over the weekend, two women were told to stop kissing each other (on the cheek) in the supermarket or leave, as a customer had complained that it was ‘disgusting.’
Sainsbury’s has apologised to the woman involved, a student at Sussex, and offered to make a £100 donation to charity. However, the Students’ Union does not feel this is an adequate response. We are calling on the supermarket to
- - Re-examine current practice, and make mandatory training to all it staff on Equality and Diversity issues to ensure a situation like this can never arise again
- - Make a substantial donation to a charity that works to end homophobia in our communities
- - Issue a public apology for the way that they have acted.
The ‘Big Kiss In’ tomorrow is open to everyone, regardless of your sexuality, to highlight that whomever you wish to kiss, it is to be celebrated.
The event will be hosted by Lydia L’Scabies, a local performance artist, and NUS LGBT Women’s Officer Fran Cowling, as well as local activists and politicians tbc.
Michael Segalov, Communications Officer, said, 'Tomorrow will be a show of strength and togetherness from the Brighton community, at which we will show that there is no place for homophobia in our community'
'We call on Sainsbury's to take their responsibilities seriously, and display a serious commitment to the cause that they claim to support. Come down and join the hundreds of us tomorrow in Brighton for a celebration of affection, no matter who they are.'
The Students’ Union will be stewarding the event, and we wish to remind everyone that all kissing must be consensual. You are of course welcome to attend and not kiss if you so wish.
